Asia Cup 2023 Curtain Raiser

by | Aug 28, 2023 | Cricket

India and Pakistan join Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nepal in the 16th edition of the Asia Cup starting August 30th at Multan. Co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the 13-match, 19-day ODI tournament ends September 17th and features two groups, with two teams from each qualifying for the Super Four stage. The top-2 teams from the Super Four stage will face off in the final at Colombo.

The 2023 Asia Cup, a men’s ODI and T20I cricket competition organised by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will be played in the 50-over ODI format for the first time since 2018, when India beat Bangladesh in the summit clash by three wickets in Dubai.

While Pakistan remain the official hosts, the tournament will be played in a hybrid model with Pakistan hosting four games and Sri Lanka nine. This, because the Indian Cricket Board BCCI refused to play in Pakistan owing to political tensions between the two countries.

The much awaited India-Pakistan clash will be played on September 2nd in Kandy and if things go to script, they could end up meeting twice more. If there are no upsets in the group stage, India and Pakistan will meet again in the Super Four stage and if both teams finish in the top-2, they will set up a blockbuster final – their third meeting in the tournament’s history.

History

India are the most successful team in the history of the Asia Cup, winning the title seven times – 1984, 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016 and 2018. Sri Lanka were winners 5 times – 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014 and 2022 and Pakistan twice (2000, 2012).
